62: How I Plan Our Weeks as a Working Homeschool Mom

As you embark on your homeschool journey, one of the most important decisions you'll make is how to structure your days. Some families thrive with a free-flowing, unstructured approach, while others, like mine, find success in what I call a “framework with flexibility.”

In this episode of the Homeschool Our Way Podcast, I dive into how this approach works for our family and how it can work for yours too!

And the concept is simple: we use time blocking throughout the week, designating specific blocks of time for different activities. This structure helps us maintain a rhythm while allowing enough flexibility to adapt to life’s inevitable curveballs.

We break our day into three main blocks—morning (8am-noon), afternoon (noon-4pm), and evening (4pm-8pm).

Here’s a snapshot of our weekly schedule:

This framework works for us because it strikes a balance between structure and flexibility...and here’s why:

  • There are no hard-and-fast times, which gives us the freedom to enjoy longer park visits or extend lessons when needed. At the same time, it ensures we stay on track with our academic goals, preventing any subject from falling through the cracks.
  • This method also helps me juggle my work with homeschooling, as it gives time for my kids to do independent learning when I’m tied up with work. It also helps my husband and me coordinate our schedules, ensuring that our kids are always covered, no matter what our day looks like.
  • The best part? This system empowers the kids to manage themselves, fostering a sense of responsibility and accountability. They know what to expect and are learning to navigate their schedules independently.

Setting up a framework like this is straightforward, and it’s a system that can easily be adapted each semester and school year. If you’d like to give it a try, click here to grab my ➡️ weekly block schedule template!
