63: Choosing Freedom: Marisol Beltran’s Bold Move to Homeschooling

Marisol Beltran is a new homeschool mom who recently made the bold decision to transition her six-year-old daughter from traditional school to homeschool, with the help of my online course called the Homeschool Launch Blueprint.

In episode 63 of the Homeschool Our Way Podcast, Marisol delves into the challenges, triumphs, and learning curves that came with making such a significant change. And she offers her very relatable and inspiring story for any parent considering homeschooling.

The Decision to Homeschool

Marisol and her husband began to notice that their first grader, Luna - who had always been full of energy and loved outdoor play - was struggling to stay on task in her Montessori classroom. And as she thought back on her older son, Jonathan, Marisol realized that he too struggled in the traditional school system, likely due to undiagnosed neurodivergence.

So this time around, knowing more about the signs of neurodivergence, Marisol and her husband started exploring alternative education options in an effort to prevent Luna from falling behind. After finding the Homeschool Our Way Podcast and listening to a few episodes, Marisol was determined not to let another moment go by before making a change. And during Thanksgiving break, Marisol made the brave decision to withdraw Luna from her public school and start homeschooling.

The Beginnings of Her Homeschool Experience

Their initial month was a whirlwind of trial and error, with Marisol experimenting with various curricula and feeling a bit unsure about her choices.

But she didn’t give up! Marisol sought the help of an educational expert to assess where Luna was academically and where gaps existed so that she could fully support her development.

Marisol also gave her family (both Luna and herself/her husband) time to adjust to the new homeschooling environment. Immediately, Luna began to relax. She went from having an aversion to attending her traditional rigid classroom environment to thriving in the more flexible, personalized setting of homeschooling.

The Homeschool Launch Blueprint

After listening to a few episodes of The Homeschool Our Way Podcast and then connecting with me, Marisol felt ready to take the next step and become part of my very first cohort of the Homeschool Launch Blueprint.

The experience gave Marisol structure for her family’s homeschool, clarity during their transition and a virtual community of other homeschool moms across the country to provide additional perspectives, ideas and support.

In addition, she loved the learning style assessment that I provide in the Blueprint! It help Marisol tailor Luna’s homeschool education to her unique needs and led Marisol to discover that Luna is a kinesthetic learner. From there, she began incorporating manipulatives into Luna's lessons, which became a game changer! This insight not only improved Luna's academic engagement but also strengthened their mother-daughter bond.

A Career Transition

While Marisol was working her way through the Blueprint course, she received a surprise job opportunity that allowed her to return to work full-time!

Again, in an effort to ensure Luna’s academic progress didn’t suffer, Marisol went into her new role armed with the knowledge from the Homeschool Launch Blueprint on how she could approach homeschooling and working full-time.

Within the parameters of her fully remote job, Marisol was able to utilize tactics that I recommend like time blocking and virtual learning to help her balance her work responsibilities with Luna’s learning, which played a crucial role in her successful transition back to work.
