71: How to Support Neurodivergent Children Through Homeschooling, with Afsaneh Moradian
Homeschooling can be a powerful tool for neurodivergent children, and no one understands this better than Afsaneh Moradian, founder of The 3rd Neurodivergent Homeschooling Summit. In a recent episode of the Homeschool Our Way Podcast, Afsaneh and I had a candid conversation about her personal homeschooling journey and the benefits of homeschooling, especially for neurodivergent learners.
Afsaneh wasn’t always pro-homeschooling. She actually preferred traditional classrooms until her own child struggled in an academic preschool setting. Seeing her child overwhelmed by a rigid curriculum and inappropriate developmental expectations led her to reconsider the path forward. Homeschooling offered a much-needed alternative—one where she could tailor the learning experience to her child's specific needs, strengths, and pace.
Why Traditional Settings Sometimes Stifle Growth
The pressures that modern preschool environments place on young children, especially those with neurodivergent tendencies, can stifle growth from a very early age. Many preschools prioritize early academic achievement, pushing literacy and pre-reading activities that are often developmentally inappropriate. This can lead to frustration, behavioral challenges, and a negative relationship with learning. In contrast, homeschooling allows for a more flexible, play-based approach that lets children explore and grow at their own pace, fostering a love for learning.
Afsaneh stresses how important it is to pay attention to your child's responses in any learning environment. Acting out or disengaging often signals that the environment isn't meeting their needs. She emphasizes that this holds true not just in early education but all the way into higher learning. By homeschooling, you can create an environment where your child thrives, rather than just surviving.
One of the most significant misconceptions Afsaneh identifies is the idea that kids need to be on some accelerated, one-size-fits-all track to succeed. Neurodivergent children, in particular, benefit from a learning environment that honors their individual development timelines. Homeschooling gives families the chance to focus on their children's strengths and interests without the pressure of meeting premature expectations. It empowers children to learn at their own pace and on their own terms, which is invaluable for building self-awareness, independence, and confidence.
