80: Blending Career, Travel & Homeschool: Tammy Gordon’s Path to Family Freedom
Have you ever dreamed about how you could arrange your life so that work and your kids’ schooling could blend more seamlessly instead of the two being in two totally separate worlds? That’s exactly what Tammy Gordon and her family did—but it wasn’t a decision that came overnight.
In my recent conversation with her, Tammy shared how her family transitioned into worldschooling to create a life rooted in freedom, family connection, and culturally rich education.
Creating an Extraordinary Life: Tammy’s Homeschool “Why”
One of the first things Tammy said during our chat really stuck with me: “We have this extraordinary human being that we get to parent; how dare we continue to just do average things?”
Tammy and her husband weren’t driven to homeschool because of a bad school experience or learning challenges. Their 9-year-old son, Cam, was thriving in a top-rated local school. But deep down, they craved something more—a life where work travel wouldn’t separate them as a family, and where their son could be part of the adventure, not left behind.
Pushing Through Fears and Taking The Leap
If you’ve ever thought about homeschooling and felt overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Tammy confessed she was scared—scared she wasn’t fully equipped to teach, scared her son wouldn’t make friends, and scared of losing her professional identity.
She told me, “I thought homeschooling would hurt my relationship with my son. I was terrified I’d mess it all up.” Sound familiar? I’ve been there too.
What helped Tammy move past that fear? She credited my online course, the Homeschool Launch Blueprint for giving her the roadmap and, more importantly, the confidence to start. Seeing other professional women of color homeschooling was also a game-changer—it made her feel like, “Hey, I can do this too.”
The Learning Never Stops
Tammy and her husband run Greenwood Seneca, a business that takes them across the U.S. and internationally. Rather than letting work trips pull their family apart, they decided to turn them into educational adventures.
In 2024 alone, they took 15 trips, including two international ones, with their son right alongside them. They created a portable homeschool system—a binder filled with daily routines, mission statements, and learning goals—so no matter where they were, school could happen.
Tammy also leveraged a number of learning resources to create an engaging experience that centers Black history and culture:
- Heritage Mom – Literature and cultural studies that celebrate Black culture
- EDmazing Learning – Virtual math, language arts, social studies, and history classes
- Because of Them We Can – Black history and culture
- The Literacy Loft – literacy resources for elementary-middle school students
In connecting the dots between Cam’s passions and Black history, when he wanted to study video games, they didn’t just talk about coding—they learned about Jerry Lawson, the Black pioneer who invented the video game cartridge.
Tammy also leverages local resources, as she enrolled her son in a California charter school to access courses like entrepreneurship while staying aligned with Common Core standards.
Socialization and Finding Community on the Road
One of Tammy’s biggest concerns as she began her homeschool journey (and I know many of us share this) was socialization. Cam is an only child, she didn’t want her son to feel isolated.
They tried homeschool pods, but ended up finding the right fit unexpectedly—through sports. Joining a travel basketball team gave her son a community, friends, and that all-important physical outlet.
“It checked all the boxes,” Tammy said. “Even though all the kids weren’t homeschooled, the values were there.”
Redefining Freedom and Family Life
One of the most powerful parts of our conversation was hearing Tammy reflect on what this journey has meant for her family.
She shared how worldschooling has deepened her connection with her son. “I thought I knew him before, but now? I really know him—his thoughts, how he processes things, what excites him.”
She also talked about the emotional work it took to let go of societal expectations—especially around work. “I had to unlearn that a 9-to-5 is the only stable path,” she said. “Now, I’ve built a life where my son is my priority, and everything else fits around that.”
Tammy’s Advice for Aspiring Worldschooling Families
If you’re toying with the idea of homeschooling or worldschooling but feel unsure, Tammy had some beautiful advice:
-
Define Your Family’s Vision: Get clear on what kind of life you want—without outside opinions.
-
Check In Often: Pulse check with your kids. How are they feeling? What’s working? What’s not?
-
Reimagine Work and Education: Don’t be afraid to break away from traditional paths. Build a lifestyle that serves your family’s goals.
-
Lean Into Freedom: Embrace the flexibility homeschooling offers. It might feel scary at first, but there’s so much beauty in the unknown.
Final Thoughts
Listening to Tammy’s story reminded me why so many of us choose this path. It’s not just about education—it’s about freedom, connection, and creating a life that feels deeply intentional.
And if you’ve been dreaming about worldschooling or simply making a change that brings your family closer, let Tammy’s story be that little nudge you need. 💛
