Are you ready to transform the way you homeschool? If you’re here, I know you’re a parent who cares deeply about your child’s education…you want them to love learning! And here’s the beauty of homeschooling: you have the freedom to build a learning experience that’s tailor-made for your child.

So, where do you start?

Here are three simple steps to create a personalized learning plan:

  1. Discover Your Child’s Learning Style.

Every child learns differently, and there are four main learning styles:

    • Visual learners love diagrams, charts, or videos…anything they can see.
    • Auditory learners thrive when they can hear—think audiobooks or discussions.
    • Kinesthetic learners are all about movement and doing—hands-on projects keep them engaged.
    • Reading/writing learners connect with words, whether it’s through books or journaling.

Identifying how your child learns best will make lessons more effective and enjoyable—for both of you.

  2. Know Your Academic Requirements and Priorities.

Before diving into resources, take a look at your state’s homeschooling requirements. Each state has its own guidelines, so make sure you’re clear on what’s expected.

You can find out your state’s requirements by clicking this link: ➡️ Homeschool Laws by State.

You can also use your state’s academic standards as a guide to help you know what your child should be learning at each grade level. Just do a search on your state’s Department of Education website to find that information.

Beyond the basic academic subjects, think about what’s important to your family. What priorities do you want to ensure are included: like Black History, faith-based learning or creative arts? This is your chance to make your homeschool truly reflect your family’s values.

  3. Tap Into Their Passions and Interests.

What lights up your child? Whether it’s dinosaurs, art, music, or sports, weaving your child’s interests into their learning journey makes school fun and memorable. A child who’s excited about the subject matter is a child who’s excited to learn!

In my family’s homeschool, we make sure to include time for extracurricular activities because they’re such an important part of a well-rounded education.

Create Your Plan

Once you’ve thought about these three things — your child’s learning style, your state’s requirements, and your child’s interests — it’s time to put it all together!

Set aside a couple of hours to brainstorm and to research. I like to do this at the beginning of each school year for my family, and I’ll sneak away to the library or to a nice coffee shop so that I can lock in and get focused.

As you’re researching, be sure to look online and in homeschool groups/forums for curriculum reviews. Homeschool moms are always willing to share, and you can find some great feedback and maybe even learn about a new resource you can use!

Then create a simple spreadsheet or a checklist to keep track of the subjects, books, and activities that you like. Make note of where you found them, how much they cost, and what reviews you may have seen about them.

Your Homeschool, Your Way!

When you combine their learning style, academic priorities, and personal passions, you create a plan that not only meets their needs, but also inspires their curiosity. So grab a notebook, brainstorm some ideas, and start creating a school year they’ll love. And remember: this is just a starting point. The beauty of homeschooling is that you can adjust as you go!
